Test your VO Chain or the Experience of Development!

1st December 2010 - General, How To Improve In 5 Minutes - , , , , , , ,

Last week I had a quiet challenging experience while rebuilding my master template session. I was curious about how some new plugs would work on my VO settings for Harry, who is our male CHR Voice on benztown branding. I got stuck for almost three hours, because I had the feeling some of the new stuff sounded better and richer, so I compared, changed and tweaked the settings. This was hard for me personal, because I woked over weeks on Harry’s settings, when starting the CHR with him. Throwing that over board was not easy, but at the end I am happy with the decision, because I experienced my own development and willing to improve.

So this is the easiest experiment ever, but one of the most challenging and effective. You will experience personal development and your VO will sound even better afterwards. I promise. Try it, NOW. Hope you don’t get caught up.

May we know some of the regular plugs you use on Harry, or anyone? Like... do you prefer the C1 comp/gate to another? Do you use the L1 in conjunction with the C1? Have you used the UAD plugs? If so... do you like them? I'm a big fan of Universal Audio's outboard gear (1176LN to be specific)...but don't think the plug in version stacks up to the outboard.

What EQ plug to you prefer? Q10? REQ6? Oxford?

I like the L2 more than the L1 (even it is not a pure limiter like the L1), it sounds cleaner and richer in the high KHZ regions to me. I use it to slam down the VO or limit at the end of my VO chain, like you see in the screenshots - and depending on the format, style...I love the Renaissance Compressor and RVOX a lot, so this is what I use most of the time. There are several great compressors out there I've tested over the years and teh C1 is still a nice alternative solution. The Sonnox stuff f.e. is beautiful as a comp section, too.

The UAD plugINs are nice, but like you I stick with the original outboard gear, we use the eq section of the MANLEY VOXBOX a lot while recording VO in the big studio. My favourite EQ PlugIn is Massenbourg EQ, but we just run it in the master studio as TDM and not on the LE, where I did the screen caps. The Sonnox stuff is brilliant, but sometimes to cryptical for me. How about the pultec stuff - I dig that. How about you guys? The high KHZ is just brilliant to me.
